Community & Economic Impact  of the Appalachian Fair

1926-2026

The Appalachian Fair is more than just an annual event -- it is a major contributor to the cultural, educational, and economic vitality of the Appalachian Highlands region.

Each year, the Fair attracts visitors from across the Appalachian Highlands, including communities throughout Upper East Tennessee, Southwest Virginia, Eastern Kentucky, and Western North Carolina.

Attendance & Regional Reach

  • Over 160,000 visitors attend during Fair Week

  • Over 1,000,000 visitors come to the fairgrounds annually through year-round events

  • Visitors travel from all over the country through the Appalachian region

Economic Impact

The Appalachian Fair generates significant economic activity for Washington County and the surrounding region through tourism, hospitality, and local business engagement.  Fair visitors support:

  • Local restaurants and retail businesses

  • Hotels and lodging throughout the region

  • Agricultural suppliers and vendors

  • Regional entertainers and small businesses

The Fair also provides fundraising opportunities for many local civic organizations and nonprofit groups who operate food stands and volunteer throughout the event.

Youth Development and Agricultural Education

A cornerstone of the Appalachian Fair is its commitment to youth education and leadership development. Each year the Fair hosts:

  • 4-H and FFA livestock shows and competitions

  • Youth agricultural exhibits and demonstrations

  • Talent competitions and pageants

  • Agricultural skill and leadership opportunities

  • Scholarship programs for participating students

Through these programs, thousands of young people gain hands-on experience in agriculture, responsibility, and community service.

A Community Resource Year-Round

The Appalachian Fairgrounds also serve the community throughout the year by hosting events, agricultural shows, festivals, and educational programs.

The fairgrounds are also designated as a Red Cross Disaster Relief Site, providing emergency shelter when needed.  In times of regional crisis, the fairgrounds have served as a staging and distribution location for emergency supplies and agricultural support for affected communities.

Looking Ahead

As the Appalachian Fair approaches its 100th Anniversary in 2026, the organization remains committed to strengthening its mission of supporting agriculture education, and community engagement throughout the Appalachian Highlands.

With continued support from volunteers, sponsors, exhibitors, and visitors, the Appalachian Fair will continue its proud tradition of bringing families together to celebrate agriculture, heritage, and community for generations to come.
